Animatic

Tuesday, November 23, 2010 • •

.
I have compiled in Windows Movie Maker an animatic of the storyboard to attempt to show how the film will play out and to discern an approximate running time of my short film.

Because I cannot tell how long each shot will last for until I have filmed my actors performing it, I set each shot to last five seconds although I know the average shot length will be less than this. I also set the first shot to be twenty seconds long as I knew that the news report will be a longer lasting shot. Therefore I imagine my film will be shorter than six and a half minutes and if it isn't then I will be prepared to make cuts where necessary.

All in all, I wouldn't say that making a storyboard and an animatic has benefited my creative process personally. I will still most likely only refer to my script, screenplay and shot list when filming my short film.

Storyboard

These 19 storyboard sheets make up the 98 shots that will feature in my music video. Below is an example. I had to darken them a little in Photoshop as my drawing is very light. I used a college scanner to scan them in and didn't notice until afterwards that the scanner had specks of paint and dirt on the glass and therefore some of the sheets look a little dirty.

Shooting & Editing Plans

Monday, November 15, 2010 • •

.
For shooting my short film, I will be using my own Canon EOS 550D. I will be shooting at 720p HD quality and at 50fps (frames per second). I could shoot in Full HD (1080p) but that would restrict me to using 25fps and because I want to use slow motion in my short film, the 50fps allows a much smoother look inppost-production.

I will also be editing on my home computer using Adobe Premiere Pro as I have done this many times before with footage from my camera. The only downside is before I can work with my footage I have to transcode it first and then render it before editing in APP which can be time consuming, however it will be worth it because working on my home computer is easier than having to share the editing suites at college and will mean I spend a lot more time on my production than I feasibly could at college. I plan on encoding rough cuts at the end of each editing week to show to my tutors.

Due to the fact that the deadline for this short film is not until April 2011, whereas the Media Studies deadline for my music video is in a few weeks, Christmas 2010, I am going to be putting all my focus on the music video to make sure it is completed within the deadline. I will start shooting this short film in January 2011 (in my own time with no scheduled lesson time for the project) and I intend to have it completed by March 2011, at the very latest.

The News Report

Friday, November 12, 2010 • •

.
I intend to shoot the news report scene before I shoot the rest of the short film as this will need to be playing in the scene (presumably live but really on a DVD, of course). I intend to shoot the news reporter reading the script in a Medium Close Up in front of my college's green screen. I will then add an edited backdrop of The Humber Bridge, as this is a conventional backdrop for Yorkshire news reports. I was originally going to emulate the look of BBC's main news reports by including a scrolling news bulletins at the bottom of the screen however emulating the look of ITV's Calendar news will be much easier as they use backdrops often and are a regional news report so an office type backdrop is not necessary.

The backdrop I will be using a high resolution picture I have found on the Humber Bridge's wikipedia page, uploaded (and presumably taken) by a user called "Uncool Eddie" which can be freely used under a Creative Commons License.

I have then edited the image to look like a picture taken at sunset, it is clearly edited but this is also conventional for a regional news broadcast.

I will also create a logo, entitling the broadcast as "Chronicle News," which will be displayed during the broadcast.

Updated Script & Shot List

Thursday, November 11, 2010 • •

.
1. INT. ROSELYN & SMITH’S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.

Shot 1: The TV report is playing on a TV. The camera is slowly zooming out from a close up of the report to reveal a CU of SMITH’S right leg and hand holding a remote (TV still in view). Other news updates are scrolling under the main report.

REPORTER
Police say they are working with every effort to find the perpetrators but are having no luck so far. The press-dubbed “rat-burglars,” so named for their dead rat calling card left at the scenes, have so far committed three bank robberies in the Yorkshire area that were completely undetected until the morning after. (muted) The police are urging anyone who has any information related to these incidents to come forward...

SMITH laughs and mutes the TV (you can clearly see the TV now has a mute logo).

Shot 2: Low-angled close-up of SMITH as he takes off a balaclava and adjusts his hair.

SMITH
Four now, mate.

Shot 3: CU SMITH’S left leg and hand. The TV on mute is still in view. SMITH throws a bag full of money across the room and moves out of shot to sit down.

Shot 4: CU ROSELYN takes off her balaclava with her back to SMITH as she is speaking. She turns around and leans on the wall.

ROSELYN
I wish you hadn’t started that rat thing, you know. You could’ve picked a better calling card, like a rose or something.

Shot 5: ROSELYN’S POV as SMITH looks up at her.

SMITH
Nah.

Shot 6: CU of SMITH as he turns his head back towards the TV, ROSELYN is visible in the background, blurred.

SMITH (CONT’D)
I like rats.

Focus pulls back to ROSELYN as she rolls her eyes.

Shot 7: CU of ROSELYN.

ROSELYN
You want a cup of tea then?

Shot 8: Shot 6 again, focus is back on SMITH and ROSELYN is blurred again.

SMITH
Yeah, cheers.

ROSELYN, still blurred, exits the room. SMITH looks down at the remote and unmutes the TV.

Shot 9: OTS SMITH as he flicks through the channels. Clips from films can be seen. (Kill Bill – Elle calling Bill from The Bride’s bedside; Chicago – ‘Six’ pulling out a red handkerchief from her husband’s mouth after poisoning him and singing “He had it coming!”; Carrie – the final scene in which Sue screams as Carrie’s hand grabs her from beneath the grave.)

2. INT. ROSELYN & SMITH’S KITCHEN. NIGHT.

Shot 10: CU profile shot of ROSELYN pouring water from the kettle into two tea cups and begins stirring the tea. In the out of focus background a mobile phone can be seen flashing intermittently and making a slight beeping noise. ROSELYN notices the light and the sound and as she turns her head the mobile phone is pulled into focus. (MUSIC: ‘Do I Look Pretty’ begins.)

Shot 11: POV shot, the phone is in the foreground of the shot as ROSELYN walks over to it. She reaches out her hand and picks up the phone.

Shot 12: CU of the phone informing us that there is one new voicemail. The background is a typically provocative picture of Angelina Jolie licking blood from her mouth (although this may not be entirely visible).

Shot 13: FS of ROSELYN looking towards the camera/open door, checking to see if SMITH is approaching.

Shot 14: CU of ROSELYN looking down at the phone in her hand and holding it up to her ear.

Shot 15: CU tracking shot moving slowly around ROSELYN as she listens to the message and fights back tears.

FEMALE VOICE
(on the mobile phone, whispering)
Hi Smith, it’s me. Look I know I shouldn’t be calling you on this number but I just had to know if it went alright. Are we still meeting at 2 at the bridge? You were meant to have called me by now. Hope you’re not having cold feet about ditching that bitch. Call me when you get this.

Shot 16: MS from behind ROSELYN slowly lifting the phone away from her ear, but then drops it.

Shot 17: CU profile, ROSELYN cusses under her breath and kneels down to pick up the phone.

Shot 19: MS ROSELYN looking over to her left in a corner.

Shot 20: CU box of rat poison.

Shot 21: CU ROSELYN’S hand picking up the phone and the cube of rat poison.

Shot 25: CU of ROSELYN as she looks toward the living room. (MUSIC: Final flourish in the song before bells.)

3. INT. ROSELYN & SMITH’S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.

Shot 26: OTS SMITH is sat watching a clip from Mr. & Mrs. Smith on the television (the fight/sex scene in the house), when he hears ROSELYN coming he looks towards the door and hastily turns off the TV as if he is embarrassed.

Shot 27: Full shot as ROSELYN walks into the living room with the two cups of tea. She walks to the table.

Shot 28: Overhead CU of ROSELYN’S hands placing the cups of tea on the table.

Shot 30: CU SMITH – smiling at ROSELYN, occupies the left of the screen.

SMITH
Thanks, love.

Shot 31: CU ROSELYN – staring at SMITH, occupies the right of the screen.

ROSELYN
Don’t mention it...

Shot 32: ECU ROSELYN’S lips.

Shot 33: CU SMITH again, slightly high angled, as SMITH looks a little confused at ROSELYN.

Shot 34: MS two-shot SMITH as he reaches forward.

Shot 35: CU ROSELYN slightly low angled, looking intensely at SMITH’S cup of tea.

Shot 35: CU overhead of the table as SMITH reaches for the cup of tea.

Shot 55: MS POV, ROSELYN’S arm stretches out to shakily place the tea cup back on the table. This area is in focus and once she has put the tea cup down the focus pulls back to SMITH who is casually folding up the newspaper, placing it on the table and picking up his own cup. ROSELYN stays bent over and does not stop coughing.

Shot 56: CU low angled, SMITH begins laughing.

SMITH
You know, Ros, I wasn’t even gonna kill you. I was just gonna take the money and run. But when opportunity knocks, who am I to ignore it, eh?

Shot 65: CU ROSELYN appears upside down to the camera and leans forward slightly to look at SMITH.

ROSELYN
For God’s sake, Smith, you shouldn’t gulp down hot drinks. Especially ones laced with rat poison. Now, I know you’re not an idiot and you were right to be suspicious of me. But I’m not an idiot either and I can play you like a puppet, Smith.

Shot 66: CU SMITH is now writhing on the floor but has stopped coughing and is merely spluttering now.

Shot 67: CU low angled, ROSELYN is still leaning forward.

ROSELYN
You honestly think that I would leave a trace of the poison on the cup. I would’ve thought even you would give me more credit than that, Smith. But you rose to the bait. I knew you didn’t know me, didn’t trust me, didn’t... love me.

Shot 68: CU overhead, SMITH.

SMITH
I never... loved you... you psycho bitch.

Shot 69: CU turns to MS as ROSELYN leans back into her seat.

ROSELYN
Well, we all go a little... psycho, sometimes. Haven’t you?

Shot 70: ECU, SMITH’S eyes wide open as he dies. ROSELYN’S HAND comes into view and closes them. (MUSIC: Budd Twang excerpt begins.)

Shot 76: CU, ROSELYN sips from the cup, savours it, then looks directly in the camera and smiles.

Aims & Context

Monday, November 08, 2010 • •

.
A short imagined film entitled “Rat” in the style of a suspense thriller to appeal to my target audience of 18-30 year old, middle class females with an intellectual leaning and feministic views.

My aim will be to create tension in the audience using cinematography, editing and sound, using the film language skills I learnt in FM1 to do so. I am also aiming for my female audience to feel empowered by Roselyn’s actions within the film even though they are immoral. Another film device I aim to use is the effect of foreshadowing combined with intertexuality, the films Smith chances upon seeing when he changes the channel all have significant meaning within the narrative and I am hoping my intellectual audience will be able to understand.

As this is a suspense thriller I have looked at Alfred Hitchcock’s films and have, therefore, been influenced by his use of cinematography, particularly in a number of scenes from ‘Psycho’ (1960, US) in which Marion Crane and Norman Bates have tea together and the final scene in which Norman is alone in his jail cell.

The story type is the story of The Spider & The Fly, otherwise known as Circe, in which a character (protagonist or antagonist) is lured into a trap, the trap in “Rat” being Roselyn luring Smith into drinking the poisoned tea.

Excepting the acting, of course, I will be undertaking all aspects of my short film’s production myself.

Updated Synopsis

Friday, November 05, 2010 • •

Rat

Roselyn and Smith are two criminals who have just returned home after pulling off a fourth successful bank robbery. Roselyn offers to make them some tea and goes to the kitchen. In the kitchen she notices one of Smith's mobile phones has a new voicemail message. She plays it and discovers it is a message from Smith's ex-girlfriend and that he is planning to ditch Roselyn and take the money for the two of them. Upset, she drops the phone and upon retrieving it she notices a box of rat poison. She decides to poison him and take the money for herself. Roselyn takes the poisoned tea through to Smith and begins acting very suspiciously. Smith notices and immediately deduces something is strange about the tea and asks for some biscuits too. Roselyn leaves to get some and Smith and switches the tea cups. When she returns and drinks from her switched cup she begins violently coughing. Smith then laughs at her and gulps from his own cup in triumph. Roselyn then stops coughing and stares at him. He begins spluttering and falls to his knees. As he dies Roselyn resolutely explains to him that she originally gave him the non-poisoned cup and he killed himself by switching the cups. She then sits back down in her seat, puts her legs up on Smith’s dead body and gazes into the camera, giving a slight smile to the audience.

Prop List, Costume, Location & Actors

Tuesday, November 02, 2010 • •

.
Prop List
  • Television set & DVD player (needed for playing a pre-recorded news broadcast)
  • Bag full of money (money is implied)
  • Balaclava (both characters will wear the same balaclava in two different shots)
  • Kettle, two cups, tea bags, sugar pot, two spoons and milk
  • Mobile phone
  • Box of rat poison & rat poison pellets/cubes
  • Sofas/chairs and table
  • Newspaper
  • Packet of biscuits
  • Vase of roses
Costume
Roselyn: Black jeans, black jumper, black balaclava. Wearing red lipstick underneath balaclava.
Smith: Black jeans, black jumper, black balaclava.
Reporter: White shirt, black jacket and burgundy tie.

Location
I have decided to use my friend Leann's kitchen and living room as locations for shooting as my house is too brightly lit, whereas hers are darker lit and more cramped. She also has black leather sofas which connotate wealth, but not extravagant wealth (Smith & Roselyn aren't foolish with their stolen money).

Actors
I have asked two of my friends, Leann and Scott, to play Roselyn and Smith. They are younger than I would like Roselyn and Smith to actually be but I will work with what I have. Neither consider themselves terrific actors either but I will try my best with them as afterall it is the filming that counts and not so much the acting performance.

1. INT. ROSELYN & SMITH’S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.

A news report is playing on a television in ROSELYN & SMITH’S living room.

REPORTER
Police say they are working with every effort to find the perpetrators but are having no luck so far. The press-dubbed “rat-burglars,” so named for their dead rat calling card left at the scenes, have so far committed three bank robberies in the Yorkshire area completely undetected until the morning after.

SMITH laughs and mutes the TV.

SMITH
Four now, mate.

SMITH dumps a bag full of money onto the ground.

ROSELYN
I wish you hadn’t started that rat thing. You could’ve picked a better calling card, like a rose or something.

SMITH
Nah, I like rats.

ROSELYN rolls her eyes and takes off her coat.

ROSELYN
You want a cup of tea then?

SMITH
Yeah, cheers.

SMITH sits down, unmutes the TV and flicks through the channels. Clips from films and TV shows can be seen. ROSELYN exits the living room.

2. INT. ROSELYN & SMITH’S KITCHEN. NIGHT.

ROSELYN enters the kitchen, turns on the kettle, gets out two cups and puts teabags, sugar and milk in both.

While waiting for the kettle to boil ROSELYN notices a flashing light on one of SMITH’S mobile phones. She walks over to it and picks it up, it is a new voicemail message. She activates the voicemail and puts the phone to her ear.

ROSELYN is dumbstruck. She shakily takes the phone away from her ear and drops it. She silently curses herself and crouches down to pick it up. She then sees the box of rat poison on the floor beside the phone. She picks up both and places them on the table next to the teacups. She looks in the direction of the living room and steels her resolve. She then opens the box of rat poison, drops some into one of the cups and tops them both off with water from the kettle. She then stirs them both thoroughly and takes the cups through to the living room.

3. INT. ROSELYN & SMITH’S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.

ROSELYN enters, places both cups on the table and sits down opposite SMITH.

SMITH
Thanks, love.

ROSELYN
(distantly)
Don’t mention it... love.

SMITH looks a little surprised at ROSELYN’S tone and reaches for the teacup but when he sees ROSELYN watching him like a hawk he reaches further and picks up a newspaper.

ROSELYN
Don’t you want your tea?

SMITH
Wouldn’t mind a few biscuits, Ros.

ROSELYN
(flustered)
Oh... Right, yeah, just a sec'.

ROSELYN gets up and exits the living room. SMITH looks in the direction of the kitchen, then leans into his tea, sniffs it, then notices a slight trace of powder on the rim of the cup. He shakes his head and smiles. He then switches the teacups.

ROSELYN returns with a plate of biscuits for SMITH. She sets them down on the table and sits back down in her seat.

ROSELYN picks up her cup and lingers with the cup at her lips. SMITH is watching her closely. ROSELYN looks over to SMITH and he hastily looks away, back to his newspaper.

ROSELYN drinks deep from her cup and looks confused at the cup and then at SMITH. She then begins violently coughing and clutching her throat.

SMITH laughs with glee and picks up his own cup.

SMITH
You know, I wasn’t even gonna kill you, Ros, I was just gonna knock you out, take the money and run. But when opportunity knocks, who am I to ignore it, eh?

SMITH laughs again, leans forward and drinks deep from his tea cup. ROSELYN immediately stops coughing and stares at SMITH.

SMITH
What the f-?

SMITH falls to the floor on his knees and begins spluttering and coughing uncontrollably.

ROSELYN
For God’s sake, Smith, you shouldn’t gulp down hot drinks. Especially ones laced with rat poison. Now, I know you’re not an idiot and you were right to be suspicious of me. But I’m not an idiot either and I can play you like a puppet, Smith.

SMITH is now writhing face up on the floor but has stopped coughing and is merely spluttering now.

ROSELYN
You honestly think that I would leave a trace of the poison on the cup. I would’ve thought even you would give me more credit than that, Smith. But you rose to the bait. I knew you didn’t know me, didn’t trust me, didn’t... love me.

SMITH
I never... loved you... you psycho bitch.

ROSELYN
Well, we all go a little... psycho, sometimes. Haven’t you?

SMITH stops moving and dies with his eyes wide open.

ROSELYN leans forward, looks at SMITH and closes his eyes. She plucks a rose from a vase and lays it on his corpse, her new solo calling card. She then picks up her tea, puts her feet up on SMITH’S corpse and stares directly into the camera. ROSELYN sips her tea and smiles to the audience.

After consideration, I have decided to change my short film's name from 'Thorn,' to 'Rat,' as I feel that it is a more appropriate title. I do like the title 'Thorn' however, I think it's meaning would be lost on some audience members, whereas the title 'Rat' is self explanatory and relates to the pair's calling card of the dead rat, the use of the rat poison as the murder weapon, and the fact that by using rat poison, Roselyn is calling Smith a rat, himself.
